Our Work

Our station has provided this service for organizations like BBC Podcasts, BBC Scotland, Outside Magazine, Smithsonian Podcasts, WNYC, and the CBC.

A recent tape sync was for a BBC’s History’s Secret Heroes in 2023. Crista McDonald was recorded for an interview regarding her late father, Eric Roberts who spied on English fascists for MI5, under the alias Jack King.

For thousands of years, fluffy white dogs could be found across the Pacific Northwest. Their exceptionally soft, crimpy hair was shorn like sheep’s wool, spun into yarn, and woven into blankets and robes by indigenous women who carefully tended them in communities across Coast Salish territory. But a hundred years ago, the woolly dog quietly vanished. Why?

Tape Syncs

In line with AIR recommendations and Tape Syncer United recommendations, our station offers Tape Sync (aka “Phoner”, “Phone Sync”, or “Double Ender”) services for a fee of $275 CAD (approximately $200 USD / £161 GBP) with our basic recording kit, the first hour of recording, and travel below 30 kilometres.

Additional recording time is charged at a rate of $50 CAD per half-hour. Other equipment fees and additional travel fees are outlined below.

Basic Recording Kit

  • Zoom H6 Handy Recorder.

  • Microphone and Mic Stand.

  • Sony MDR-7508 (for monitoring)

Other Equipment

  • Additional equipment like extra headphones, mics, a laptop (for Zoom Interviews), etc will be charged a $75 to $100 CAD fee.

Travel Fees

Per AIR recommendations, for tape syncs that require more than 30 kilometres of travel, we charge a round trip per-kilometre travel fee of ¢.56 CAD.

Travel costs to a nearby community like Duncan would cost $56.11 CAD. Travel to a more remote community on Vancouver Island like Port Hardy would cost $433.78 CAD.

For travel that involves a ferry (for a nearby gulf island, e.g. Gabriola, Salt-Spring, Denman or Hornby), we will charge for the ferry fare.

Cancellations

Tape syncs take our staff off other projects they’re focused on. We charge a 100% kill fee if a sync is cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled interview time and a 50% kill fee if a sync is cancelled within 48 hours.

The kill fee may be waived if the interview is rescheduled.

Audio Files

A 16 or 24-bit WAV file at 44.1kHz and 60 seconds of room tone will be sent within 2 hours of sync via your preferred service.

Credit

Our station and its staff appreciate credit for their work. Please consider including us in the complete credits in the finished recording, or show notes in the podcast or accompanying web piece.

Paperwork

We do not do this work as freelancers. Please ensure that any relevant tax forms are for an entity, rather than an individual. IE: For the IRS a W8-BEN-E rather than a W8-BEN.
